Fremont became a city in 1956, when Niles, Centerville, Irvington, Mission San Jose and Warm Springs joined together, and the roofs still tell you which part of town you're standing in. Niles has older houses near the mouth of the canyon, with steeper pitches and the patchwork a roof collects over a long life.
