Stone Coated Roof Flashings

The roofer brochure answers the question of what we coat in two words: any flashing. Printed under that heading are Plumbers, Assemblies, Valley, O'Hagins, Nosing, Roof to wall, Saddles, Skylights, Steep flashings and Specialty flashings. Between them they cover most of the metal on a reroof, from the plumber flashing at each vent pipe to the valley metal carrying water down where two slopes meet.

Some of those names are worth a line of explanation. Assemblies are plumbing flashings built as a base with a cone, and they are where most leak trouble starts, which is the next section. Valley metal runs the full length of the valley, so a bare one is visible from the street. Stone coated, it sinks into the roof color, as the Resawn valley in our gallery shows. Nosing is edge metal. Roof to wall flashings tie the roof into a sidewall. Saddles turn water around a chimney instead of letting it sit behind it. Skylight flashings wrap the skylight where it meets the shingles. Steep flashings and specialty flashings close out the list. Our Rapid Sleeve flyer asks roofers, "Have a special flashing you want us to coat?" and answers, "We've got you covered!" If the piece on your job is not named here, call and describe it.

Roof jacks are our specialty. A roof jack, also called a pipe jack, is the flashing a plumbing vent pipe passes through: a flat base that laps under the shingle courses, and a cone that rises up around the pipe. The trouble with a lot of pipe jacks is the cone. Plumbing flashings and assemblies leak at the seam on the cone, and various manufacturers' flashings leak right there. Spray paint cannot seal that seam. It only covers it. Left alone, a leak at the cone could lead to mold, algae, and corrosion of the interior infrastructure, all from one thin line of metal the homeowner never sees.
